Eid ul Adha, also known as Bakra Eid, is a significant Muslim holiday marking the culmination of the annual Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca. Observed on the 10th day of Dhu al-Hijjah, the final month of the Islamic lunar calendar, its date varies globally based on the sighting of the new moon.
Date of Eid ul Adha 2024:
As per a Hindustan Times report, Muslims in various countries, including the UK, US, Canada, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Qatar, and others, will look for the crescent moon on Wednesday, June 06, 2024, marking the 29th day of the Hijri calendar month Dhul Qa'adah. If sighted, Dhul Hijjah begins on June 07, 2024, initiating Eid-ul-Adha celebrations starting from June 16, 2024 (Dhul Hijjah 10). The Day of Arafat, a significant Hajj rite, will be observed on Tuesday, June 15, 2024 (Dhul Hijjah 9).
In the absence of the moon's sighting after maghrib prayers on June 06, 2024, Eid al Adha celebrations in these countries will commence on June 17, 2024 (Dhul Hijjah 10), with Arafah Day preceding it on June 16, 2024 (Dhul Hijjah 9). The holy month of Dhul Hijjah will start on Friday, June 08, 2024.
Conversely, in nations like the Sultanate of Brunei, Japan, Hong Kong, India, Pakistan, Malaysia, Indonesia, and other South Asian countries, preparations will be made to sight the crescent moon of Dhul Hijjah on June 07, 2024. If seen, Eid-ul-Adha will be celebrated on June 17, 2024; otherwise, it will be observed on June 18, 2024. This timing is aligned with the commencement of the Hajj pilgrimage, one of Islam's five pillars, which precedes Eid Al Adha on the tenth day of the Islamic month of Dhu Al-Hijjah.
Eid ul Adha Celebration and Rituals:
The holiday commemorates Prophet Ibrahim's obedience to God, who intervened as he prepared to sacrifice his son, replacing him with a ram. Sacrificing an animal symbolizes surrendering wealth to Allah, with the meat shared among family and the needy, fostering generosity and unity.
Eid begins with Eid Salah, a special prayer followed by a sermon emphasizing Islamic values like compassion and unity. Social gatherings, feasting, and gift exchanges are common, reinforcing familial bonds and gratitude.
In India, Eid is celebrated enthusiastically, streets are adorned, markets bustling, and traditional dishes prepared. Saudi Arabia's celebrations are magnified by the Hajj pilgrimage, transforming Mecca into a global congregation of worship.
Eid ul Adha transcends religious boundaries, welcoming people of all faiths to partake. In India, non-Muslims often join, showcasing the nation's diverse cultural tapestry and fostering interfaith understanding.
